When healthy food breaks the bank while fast food burgers cost less than a cup of soda 😡 . This, my friends, is why for the first time in human history, there are more overweight people walking the earth than underweight. Why might this be? Well for one, our planted landmass in the United States is largely taken up by wheat, corn and soy production. We eat much of these subsidized crops, but also a lot of it is refined into oils and sugar that is then fed to cows (which also get a hefty subsidy.) . 5% of the planted landmass in the United States is dedicated to growing vegetables, which is perhaps one reason why they're relatively so expensive! 90% of Americans do not consume enough of them, according to the CDC, and may explain why the same proportion is deficient in at least one vitamin or mineral. . When you consider the research showing how one large daily salad (something I'm an advocate for and talk about in my book Genius Foods) might actually prevent brain aging, it becomes evident that society seems to want youthful, high performance brains to be a privilege of the upper class. Maybe that’s it’s way of maintaining the status quo. But I think we can change that. What say you? . Let me tell you a secret... . you probably think I made some enormous change to get here.. well I didn’t.. would you believe me if I said it was just a series of little things that made all the difference . . So Before we talk about what’s different ...let’s talk about what’s still the same . I’m still in my thirties I still have two kids I still don’t go to the gym I still eat chocolate 🍫 I still eat cake 🧁 I still drink alcohol 🥂- sounds good right? . . Now let’s talk about what’s different? .. . Instead of putting fitness on this impossible pedestal of fancy gyms ...exorbitant membership fees... huge amounts of free time and of course having access to childcare... Instead , I work out at home I work out around my children I started with just 30 mins 3 times a week I walked my dog I used minimal to no equipment (just one 5kg kettlebell to be precise) . . Instead of trying to give up everything I love FOREVER trying to fit an impossible mould .. I moderated and ate a little bit of everything. . Instead of quitting every time i ate something less than healthy I just moved on.. straight on to my next choice and tried to make that choice a better one . . Instead giving up cake (my FAVOURITE THING) ... I make good choices with my food as often as possible so that I can eat cake when ever the opportunity arises. . Instead of trying to find that elusive thing that ‘WORKS ‘I just WORKED... and did a little something EVERYDAY . You see, It’s not this one big overwhelming, overnight change that you need to make.. its little things .. little and often everyday.. drink a little bit more water, go for a little walk, eat a little bit of what you love 🍫along side a lot of what you know is GOOD 🥗... spend half an hour a few times a week doing something that makes you break a little sweat ... and keep going, just a little every day... you’ll soon find a LITTLE BIT ... goes A LONG WAY and it’s not scary or expensive or time consuming or anything you’ll ever feel you need to QUIT. BUT IT ALL ADDS UP.. and before you know it you realise the little changes WERE the BIG DIFFERENCE all along.💗 #transformation #beforeandafter
This morning I woke up, hopped on the scale, and was eleven pounds lighter. 💃🏻 I was excited but minutes later as I was looking in the mirror I let out a *sigh* and thought " if only I was 30 pounds thinner..." I immediately ran to my garage and started searching through boxes of my old clothes. I spent the next hour trying on clothes from when I weighed 240 pounds. It was only four years ago but sometimes it feels like those days never existed. You get so used to where you're at now that you forget how far you've come. These shorts used to fit like the shorts in the left photo and this bra used to be so extremely tight. It felt good to see and relive these victories even though they feel so insignificant now. As the year gets busy and the excitement of your resolutions become dull, take a moment to realize why you're doing this. No one sees change immediately. These results weren't from a week, a month, or even a year of hard work. This has been four full years of lifestyle changes, workouts, and learning how to balance work, health, and fun. If your progress is slow, don't get discouraged and give up. There's no point because you'll eventually have to start over and you'll be even further from your goal. Instead, keep on going, remember your why, and think of how amazing you'll feel at the end of the year when you can truly say that you put in the work and killed it in 2019. 🥂
